Sublime comenzó en 1988 en Long Beach, California como una banda que combinaba reggae, ska, rap y punk rock,fue una banda de ska punk y reggae originaria de Long Beach (California). La música de la banda combinaba, además de los anteriormente citados, dub, punk rock, funk, ska, y hip hop. Sublime estaba formada por tres integrantes: Brad Nowell (voz y guitarra), Bud Gaugh (batería), and Eric Wilson (bajo). Alcanzó su mayor éxito popular con su tercer álbum auto-titulado.

Sin embargo, Nowell murió de una sobredosis de heroína dos meses antes de que éste fuese lanzado, por lo que los miembros restantes se separaron. Mundialmente, Sublime ha vendido 17 millones de álbums.1

En 2009, los miembros sobrevivientes decidieron reformar la banda con Rome Ramírez como el reemplazo de Nowell. Sin embargo, poco después de realizar en el Smokeout Festival de Cypress Hill, un juez de Los Angeles les prohibióel uso del nombre "Sublime". Esto se debió a que Nowell había sido dueño de los derechos del nombre Sublime, y como resultado, no se le permitió usarlo sin la aprobación y el permiso de su estado. En enero de 2010, la demanda se resolvió y la nueva formación ahora realiza junto con Sublime with Rome, que lanzó su primer álbum Yours Truly el 12 de julio de2011.

Tras la separación de la banda, hasta el año 2009, los miembros restantes, Eric Wilson y Bud Gaugh, comenzaron otra vez con la banda teniendo un nuevo integrante Rome Ramirez.

En 2008, el videojuego Guitar Hero: World Tour incluyó en su repertorio la canción "Santeria". Luego, en 2009, Guitar Hero 5 incluyó la canción "What I Got"
